Croatia - the undiscovered food paradise.

Croatia | After an exciting, adventurous, food filled and exhausting couple of weeks in Norway, Spain and Italy it was time for a lay down in Croatia. Well that was the plan.

Lamb Rack - Divino Restaurant - Hvar

Then we hit Split for visit one of two on this trip. Or it hit us - in the legs mainly. The steps. So many steps - everywhere. More on that later.

As is our wont we stay in the old cities in Europe when we can and where they exist, Bilbao, Istanbul, Athens and now Split.

Founded in AD 305 Split has been home to Roman refugees, Venetian, Hungarian and Byzantine conquerors.

The old city is truly remarkable and a tribute to Europe’s dedication to preserving and respecting history. As in Bilbao, the only way to get from A to B in Split old town is on foot. And in summer it can be hard work. But luckily, we knew where to eat already.

Our first pick, Corto Maltese was totally full when we swung by so we strolled back to plan B, Zinfandel Food and Wine Bar.

Nestled in an insanely skinny, retail laden, alley this cool, moody and totally edible resto was the bomb. As always in Europe and in particularly in Croatia, the welcome by staff is always with open arms.

This is usually followed with exceptional food and service. Zinfandel was no different.

I opted for the lamb and the Uber Blonde; the house made ravioli. Both meals were superb, and it appears that you would be hard pressed to get a bad meal in Split or any of the many other restaurants in Croatia we visited.

The menus vary - from traditional, 12 hours slow cooked beef cheeks to exciting lamb variations. And all the seafood you would long for in between.

But you need to be fit. There are so many stairs in the Dubrovnik and Split old cities that you feel like you are scaling Mount Everest whenever you go anywhere – and yes lugging a 25kg suitcase up twelve flights of wide, slippery stone steps is a challenge.

Croatia is a must do, before it gets busy....

Where we dined:

  • Dubrovnik - Moby Dick (Old City)

  • Split - Zinfandel, Bokeria, Corto Maltese (All Old City)

  • Hvar - Divino Restaurant, Dalmatino

  • Brac\Bol - Belvedere Dalmatian, Stina (wine)
