Having your restaurant aligned with bo-ho culture is probably not what you, as a restaurateur, want to read in a national, iconic food magazine.
But in the same week this little bo-ho joint won Best new restaurant in the WA Good Food awards.
In three short months Blaze Youngs skills in Niuew Ruin's kitchen have elevated the place and her food to local and national recognition and her to Best Chef in the same awards.
Its an outstanding achievement for the tight knit team in such a brief amount of time. Helmed by the bubbly, seasoned hospo veteran Maria Marter (Mrs Brown, Republic of Fremantle) the place hums efficiently and with purpose.
On the half dozen times we have been in house the service never flags - nor does the friendly attitude of the staff.
The menu is succinct but covers all palates easily and the voluminous wine list hits the same mark.
On the food side I just have two words for you - Pork and Rabbit pie floater. Well its five but you get the idea.
This is an exquisite dish reminiscent of just stepping off your steed after a fox hunt and sitting down to this at lunch.
Sturdy filo pastry sitting in a fab shallot and green pea jus. The filling is unctuous and rich.
A dish unlike any I have had in any country. And quite possibly Perth's dish of the year.
On this visit we paired this wonder with wonderful tinned Sprats served with boiled eggs, pickled red onion and parsley pesto. Superb food.
Nieuw Ruin covers all bases and is the best thing to happen in Freo for a long time (sorry Lions and Tigers..).
