Green Snake Beans and fermented chilli - Shobosho

Super chilled Japanese vibe in Leigh Street.

Shobosho is one of those hole in the wall venues that really nails the stated cuisine - brilliant Japanese dishes.

We stumbled in here a couple of years ago and chose poorly, this year not so much.
At 11.30am on a public holiday this place was humming, and James provided excellent service from moment one.

Whilst not a fan of booths, it worked out as we watched the kitchen run at what would seem a glacial pace. But the food was swiftly in front of us.

First up were the Prawn and Ginger wontons. Succulent and juicy in a fish dashi with chilli oil. Yum.

We tied this with Tasmanian Barringwood Cuvée and a Merchants “Natorius” sparkling from Margs. Both great palate followers for the wontons but the Marg’s number was winning – hands down.

Next up was a true winner - Blue swimmer crab with apple, radish yuzu mayo and nori dust.
A delicious dish, thankfully not overshadowed by the mayo, the sweet crab flesh was first and foremost on the palate. Just brilliant.

Wines were required so I opted for a William Fevre Chablis and the Uber also went French with a Des Ferrages Rose from Provence - both superb.

Grilled Snake Beans followed with fermented chilli and scorched nuts (main picture). Beautifully crunchy beans with an insidiously hot chilli dressing. Fab.

A bit of a breather while we decided on what was next. The gap was perfectly helped along by a nice, local Altamont Pinot Gris.

We decided on the Pork and cabbage potsticker dumplings and were rewarded with six luscious, burnt-sided dumplings swimming in a brilliant chilli\soy jus.

We finished with the baked blueberry cheesecake, mirin and black sesame meringue.

A superb, if very expensive, dive into Japanese cuisine.

Adelaide still has it…
