In recent times, during COVID and earlier, the question of where to have a drink on the way home after lunch has produced some remarkable results and discoveries. Spritz, Lupolab, Mrs Brown, The Rechabite et al.
Invariably the roader venues have been revisited for lunch and the discovery cycle continues.
The most recent occurrence, after lunch at the Old Laundry, saw us Google mapping nearby spots and deciding on Birraz.
So, with absolutely no research, well, apart from the wine list, we were there less than ten minutes later for a drink.
A week later we were back for lunch.
This place is seriously Italian! A menu to die for and a wine list to accompany you to the next life.
Birraz is at the busy end of Oxford street and we sat outside in the chilly shade waiting for the sunlight to bless us with a visit.
The staff are amazing, attentive, devoted to food and fun.
It is an all Italian\Sardinia\Sicilian wine list and we grabbed a Grillo and a Soave.
And you need a beverage to steel you for the wonderful menu. Everything from buffalo sausages, to grilled baby squid and beyond. Overwhelming really. This is not a one visit place!
We chose the Salsiccia & Pepperoni (Italian sausage and Capsicum) $18, Duck Cannelloni $26 and the Toscana salad $19.
It is a lovely Saturday afternoon and there is a buzzy crowd on the footpath and a lot of doof going by in their cars. Nice.
The Toscana salad popped up first and was a surprise - shredded lettuce, marinated red onion and the king of tubers - kipfler potatoes. Lightly dressed with olive oil and balsamic, this was a winner.
Our other dishes followed swiftly and without fanfare. The cannelloni nicely oven-hot and the duck succulent and deeply rich.
The sausage and capo were fabulous, with the sausage presenting a chili bite that was unexpected but delicious.
This is rustic Italian fare at its absolute best. Add this place to your to-to list, it is so worth it.
