Another pristine early-Winter weekend, a long weekend actually. In Perth, long weekends can prove to be problematic for foodies, with very few quality venues open.
Luckily we had options - mainly Mt Hawthorn. And as we tooled up a very quiet Scarborough Beach Road, it was strange to see the patina of a vibrant resto and pub strip with only a smattering of places open - and those that were looked like that were heaving.
Anyhoo, our target, Lupo Lab, was only moderately busy with the annoying late morning coffee crowd who occupy tables better used by real diners.
The lovely owner recognised us and piled us into one of the cute outdoor settings and we listened to the doof-doof traffic go by as we cruised the menu.
Recalling that the serves are quite large here, we decided on one main and a couple of sides.
As tempting as the soft and juicy polpette are at Lupo we decided we could not eat those and a main <insert sad face>, so we went for the Fettucine with Spicy crab (29) and the Fennel Salad (13).
The wine list for Lupo is one of the best in Perth, sorry Shadow, largely Italian and all very approachable in price and variety.
Our fave of all, Falanghina, a flinty white from Campania (12) was a surprise find and we dove in for one each.
As predicted, the fettucine dish was huge and absolutely outstanding. Tons of juicy blue swimmer crab and an aggressive chilli heat. Just divine.
The crunchy, perfectly dressed fennel number was a perfect foil against the spicy crab.
This place has a great food buzz and vibe. Get rugged up, go the early and sit outside - you won't regret it.
