As hospitality gets back to its feet, albeit cautiously, we have been busy hurling money into any venue we can find - Ischia, Mrs Brown, Swan Valley. You get the idea.
The latest beneficiary - the stunning Millbrook Winery and resto an hour south of Perth.
We are not new to this place but the next level service and offerings hit us like a brick wall. And it's smiles and courtesy from the moment you leave your tracing details to when you, sadly, leave.
Its a sunny, bright but very chilly day down south. We were early and snagged the best seat in the house on the patio outside the tasting room (the dining room is booked out for weeks), see image above.
On scale, this is not the cheapest place for wine or food but for vibe and charm its at the top of a long ladder.
The wine tastings have been pared back to either the reds or whites or both. We went hard and got both.
We also went for everything on the cheese and produce tasting list.
The wines. Whilst Millbrook wines will never venture out of the Shiraz/Chards/Sauvignon comfort zone, they still produce above average but predictable drops.
We were presented with a trio of each colour - the Estate Shiraz Viognier, Regional Grenache\Shiraz\Mourvedre and the Barking Owl Shiraz. In the whites we had Regional Viognier, Regional Sauvignon Blanc and the Chardonnay.
Nothing to see here really. The only wine that tasted anywhere near what the name suggested was the Sauvignon.
The day didn't really need saving but if it did, the food, served on a massive wine barrel lid, would have been it!
The only produce presented that was not produced on site was the sheep milk cheese. All the rest - olives, olive oil, pork salsiccia and the blood plum jam were made on site.
Nice effort really.
And a truly fab way to while away a winters day.
You don't need to book a spot in the tasting room but do it anyway - its a brilliant, relaxing spot.
