Perth | Say that to some older Perth residents and they would step back and look at you funny.
But the reality is, and as much as people turn their nose up at the mention of the precinct, Perth's once seedy neighbour has cleaned up its act and hums with fab food and a modern family vibe. Its also dragging savvy foodies across Yagan Square out of the CBD for some truly inventive food.
Indian, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and modern Australian fare are all the go on and around William street.
Some of the highlights:
Breezy, friendly and always pushing the boundaries of food and wine, No Mafia is one of the veterans of William Street. And its stilling killing it!
One of food entrepreneur Emma Ferguson's many dining projects in Perth.
Not your typical Italian outfit though, if you are looking for a good lasagna - nope; spag bol - nope.
However if you are after white anchovies, pumpkin arancini or maybe a serve of slow braised lamb shoulder then walk on in. And the wine list is replete with edgy Italian, Spanish and other European gems.
This place is the bomb. Go.
Best thing on the menu - Gnocchi.
Another William Street veteran, the Biv's Anthony and Amanda Princi have been rolling out inventive Eastern-inspired plates for years and the place is packed every night. Fish, lamb, chicken, goat and a heavy push on vegetable plates, brings Morocco's palate to Perth.
Great vibe, staff and wine puts Biv in Northbridge's top five.
Best thing on the menu - goat.
Occupying a big space on the corner of William and James street, Sauma has quietly crept up the culinary ladder serving modern and traditional Indian dishes. And its mid range pricing makes it very group/family friendly.
Best thing on the menu - the Tiffin lunch.
