After a superb lunch on a bright, sunny afternoon we were left with trying to position this new find in our ever-growing list of fabulous a) new resto’s, and b) new Italian resto’s.
But let’s wind it back a bit. The Uber Blonde had booked here, unseen, after a recommendation from a friend (hereon someone who will always attract, and totally be deserving of, my high esteem).
Anyhoo, here we are one floor above Market Street in Freo browsing a menu that belies our location and belief.
For rustic protein lovers, you are set - rabbit, venison, boar, lamb and, of course, baby goat, are there to tempt you.
On the flip side there are dishes you would not normally see on an Italian, or other, menu - codfish mousse on crisp polenta, a green leaf salad with pickled pear, red onion and goat’s cheese.
This is not an Italian menu we have seen before; the choices are quite amazing.
The wine list is first class and cheap - a brilliant Italian Verdicchio for $10 a glass as an example.
The service is sharp, and the balcony seating is roomy and hums with the passing traffic below. A place you could occupy for hours…
What we ate:
Focaccia $9 - Woodfired focaccia with rosemary, Sicilian sea salt, olive oil
Baccala Mantecato $18 - Salted cod fish mousse on fried polenta
Insalata La Sosta $15 - Mixed Leaves Salad, Snap Peas, Pickled Pear, Sour Red Onions, Beetroot Chips, Goat Cheese
Coniglio Alla Cacciatora $38 - 16 hours Slow Cooked Leg Rabbit, Mediterranean Herbs, Olives, Garlic, Potato Puree, Sautéed Vegetables
What we drank:
Borgoluce NV Prosecco Valdobbiadene DOCG Brut $14
Monte Schiavo Verdicchio DOC $10
Corte Giara Pinot Grigio $10
Amano Bianco Fiano Blend $12
Umani Ronchi Montepulciano D’Abruzzo $11
All the dishes were superb and perfect for sharing, but for me the winner of the day was the salad. A refreshing take on a traditional side – sharp flavours from the pickled pear, the smoothness of the goats cheese and the gentle punch of the sour red onions.
PS:…….if you have room you must try Melting Chocolate Moment $18, theatre and desert in one.
La Sosta is a hidden gem in Freo’s heart and a fab way to continue our Italian food journey.
