Chargilled chicken skewers - Shirleys - Fremantle

It’s not often that you can surprise the Uber Blonde and I with food - given our hundreds of dining experiences in this country and around the globe.

From Michelin starred dining in Singapore and Spain to superb pub food in South Freo, we have seen and loved it all.

That was until November 2024 when we strolled into Shirleys in the heart of Fremantle.

Two revelations - firstly, the manager and maître de, Flo, was a guy who had been serving us for ten years in varied venues - Bread in Common, Manuka Woodfire Kitchen, and a few others and he runs a tight ship with a casual hand.

Secondly, this place has flown under our radar for some time, much to our later chagrin.

The kitchen is the size of a walk-in robe and under the sharp eye of ex-Manuka Woodfire Kitchen head chef, Kenny McCardy and sous Hunter, they present incredible, modern Australian dishes.

Think Tiger Prawn cocktails, charred chook skewers with green papaya salad as entrees, and a grilled lamb fillet paired with pea puree, and mint and shallot vinaigrette as one of the superb mains.

The cocktails and wine list are carefully curated and change often, but there is always a multi country selection of reds and whites.

This is a special experience and unique to Fremantle, it also sails above its neighbours, Gypsy Tapas House and Cassia for service and vibe.

Shirleys is a must visit venue.
